Friday 1st June saw students and staff from Ysgol Goronwy Owen and about 70 local residents from Benllech and Moelfre get together to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubillee which also helped to raise £80 for the Alzheimer’s Society.
The event was organised by local Police Community Support Officers Iona Beckman and Caitlin McGonigle and made possible by the support from PACT (Police and Community Trust). PCSO Beckman said “The event was a great success and we were entertained by the students who sang, danced and played for the 100 plus people present. It was also a great opportunity for the young, elderly and local Police to get together over a cuppa and sandwich!”
PCSO Beckman added that several people contributed towards the success of the day including Kathryn Dignam a WRVS volunteer, Nick Barwell who taxied several of the elderly residents to and from the event, Ffion Fyles a student from Ysgol David Hughes and local Councillor Ieuan Williams for attending and supporting the project.
PCSO Beckman concluded “This diversionary project we hope will improve the relationship between the elderly and the young creating a positive impact on the community breaking down barriers that may have existed. It will also reinforce the local Neighbourhood Policing Team’s commitment in doing all they can to build up that confidence and trust”.
