An array of new equipment is on its way for budding young boxers in Rhyl thanks to a helping hand of a local officer.
PCSO John McLoughlin applied for a Police And Community Trust (PACT) grant for the Marsh Road based club and packed a punch with his application as he succeeded in gaining a £250 grant.
As a direct result, new safety and training equipment – including skipping ropes, punch bags and gloves are all on order for the young boxers who train at the Communities First Building each week.
“The club is run by experienced volunteers and is open to children from all backgrounds,” explained PCSO McLoughlin, who previously covered the West Rhyl area. “It teaches them basic life skills including respect, discipline as well as encouraging social skills and fitness.”
“It’s a friendly, well run club where the staff get to know the youngsters well from working closely with them. A large number attend the sessions every week and it costs £1 to train. This doesn’t cover much in the way of costs so I’m really pleased to have helped obtain the grant which should go some way to help buy and replace equipment which is well used.”
