Police and Community Trust (PACT), in partnership with Clwyd Theatr Cymru, have recently delivered a highly successful five week programme of interactive drama workshops aimed at showing young people the consequences of crime, called – “Justice in a Day” which aims to encourage young people away from criminality.
The recent workshops investigated youth-on-youth assault as a result of malicious cyber and text bullying but “Justice in a Day” has the capacity to be adapted to target any issues such as anti-social behaviour, road safety, and drug and alcohol education.
The workshop led by Emyr John, a Drama Outreach Worker at Clwyd Theatr Cymru, follows a character called Alex from before he committed a crime to his trial, imprisonment and the consequences for his family, friends and the victim. It is performed by professional actors Richard Shackley and Clare Barron
The project involved Year 9 students (age 13-14) from over 50 Secondary School representing every county in north Wales in a series of interactive workshops that investigated the causes and consequences of the above issues on the offender, the victim, their families and the wider community.
The interactive nature of the project enabled young people to be involved in a frank, honest and open investigation into the consequences of criminal actions. Each school spent a full day in specially created workshops which included a Court session and discussing sentencing and its impacts with Magistrates.
Justice in a Day, which ran from 27th February to 30th March, was made possible by funding from Comtek Network Systems Ltd, Magnox, Thomas Howell’s Education Fund, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service and a donor from the Wrexham area, together with support from University Glyndwr, north Wales Magistrates, and HM Courts.
The workshops were thoroughly enjoyed and judging by the participation of the students clearly understood as well. It is hoped they can be repeated and expanded throughout the region.
