In a bid to tackle rural crime in North West Wales, the Rural Crime Team has worked with PACT (Police and Community Trust) to set up a Farmwatch scheme in the area.

This scheme was set up after a community meeting was held earlier this year in the local area. The meeting came after a series of sheep thefts in the area and was to find a solution to the problem.

Farmwatch enables combined forces and resources to provide up-to-date intelligence on criminal activity in rural areas. This raises awareness and enables people to take preventative measures.

PCSO Rhys Evans applied for the £240 PACT grant which has gone towards purchasing 10 metal Farmwatch signs. These have been put up in the Cwn Ystradllyn and Cwn Pennant areas and will benefit around 20 farms in the area.

Dave Evans from PACT says, “PACT trustees are very pleased to support the Rural Crime Team in their extremely valuable work with their work with the farming community and support the volunteers in this Farmwatch scheme. Volunteers continue to play a vital role in the fight against crime in partnership with their local policing teams.”

The scheme will allow farms in the area to benefit from the community coming together to tackle crime in their local neighbourhood.

PCSO Rhys Evans says, “We received several complaints re theft of sheep in the Cwm Ystradllyn and Pennant areas in Gwynedd. As a result of these complaints we organised a public meeting which was attended by local farmers, both the Farmers Unions and local councillors. During the meeting it was decided that amongst other crime prevention measures, we would look to purchase metal FARMWATCH signs to be placed at strategic locations. I applied to PACT and received a grant towards the signs which were handed to Eifion Williams a farmer in Cwm Ystradllyn . These signs will hopefully help deter crime in the area.”
