Primary schoolchildren from the Bangor area have joined a Gwynedd Council and North Wales Police project to transform the appearance of an underpass in the city.

Following some concerns that the walls of the tunnel between Maesgeirchen and Llandygai was being vandalised, a plan was developed with Ahmed Refaat, the area’s Police Community Support Officer (PCSO), to work with local primary schools design an appropriate mural for the tunnel underlining the importance of road safety.

The pupils recently visited the tunnel to see the work which faced them to complete the mural. The painting work will begin in September.

Claire Evans, Gwynedd Council Road Safety Officer said:

“We are delighted that local pupils have shown such an interest in the scheme and pride in their community – their enthusiasm has ensured that the completed mural will be well worth seeing, and will transform the appearance of the underpass.

“We would like to thank Dave Evans PACT Co-ordinator and Peter Rogers High Sheriff of Gwynedd’s for their support for the scheme – our hope is that the project will encourage local residents to take pride in their community, as well as being a great opportunity for local children to learn about road safety in a fun and colourful way.”

Claire Evans, has visited the schools involved Ysgol Hirael, Ysgol Llandygai and Ysgol Glan Cegin discussing road safety with the pupils, before they went ahead to design the mural.

Local artists, Glyn Price from Cwm y Glo and Andrew Davies, Communities First project worker have also held workshops with the children and will be working with the pupils to paint the final design for the underpass.

The scheme has received financial support from PACT in order to support the art workshops, and the Focus company at Bangor has generously donated all the paint and painting equipment for free.
